The Sounding Board / April 2003

The Sounding Board is a forum for members to sound off on the topic of the month.

APRIL TOPIC:

A story in "IQ Watch" this month is about a student suspended under a zero-tolerance policy for bringing a "Swiss-army calculator" to school.

Is the threat of violence in schools so bad that zero-tolerance policies are the only way to deter it? Or should we look at each case on an individual basis?

What do you think?

We tolerate a great deal in the adult world, so zero-tolerance policies are a clear signal that we consider the people upon whom they are being enforced to be somewhat inferior and powerless, undeserving of the same slack we cut ourselves and each other.
